Almost Ready to Go

Well, we are almost ready to go. We have some big suitcases packed with a ton of helpful stuff for the people we are meeting in Nicaragua. We have toys, pencil pouches, balls, sewing machines, microscopes and other materials which we hope to deliver to our sister school in Managua. We will be staying at the Nehemiah Centre which is located at:

Our basic itinerary looks like this:

LEAVE ACS at 2:30am by van to Vancouver International Airport
DEPARTURE VANCOUVER 7:10am - ARRIVAL HOUSTON - 1:37pm
DEPARTURE HOUSTON 6:40pm - ARRIVAL MANAGUA - 9:01pm
Monday - Arrive Late
Tuesday - All school assembly with our Sister School Centro de Fe / Tour of the National Palace
Wednesday - Working at Divina Salvador
Thursday - Visiting our sister school and presentations of each school
Friday - Spanish Class / Hockey and Softball
Saturday - Cultural Day
Sunday - Church at Centro de fe
Monday - Painting Project
Tuesday - Meet / Work with Grade 11 Students from Sister School
Wednesday - Huembes Market and Working at Divinia Salvador
Thursday - Travel Home to Canada
DEPARTURE MANAGUA 12:10pm - ARRIVAL HOUSTON - 4:45pm
DEPARTURE HOUSTON 8:53pm - ARRIVAL VANCOUVER - 23:52

Final Conversations

Dakota and Joel had some final words as they said good-bye in English.

The grade 10 students made an acrostic for us to share at the closing assembly.

The students made banners, acrostics, posters and collages for us to say Adios... friends.

At the Market

We went to the Nicaraguan market today to buy some hand crafted goods. It was a fantastic market with wonderful products at very reasonable prices.

Final Painting Project

We finished off the painting at the school where we began more than a week ago. It seemed strange to go back because it seemed like so long ago that we arrived here...

Thank Yous

We received thank you gifts from the pastor of the church/school where we painted classrooms. There was a short ceremony to honor Peter and Trudy and our team for the work done on their school. Peter and Trudy added three classrooms to the school and have been working there since November. They loved their new classrooms.

We met with CDF leaders is discuss our current relationship and what it might look like in the future.

A Beaming Smile

Dan scraped the beams to prepare them for painting in the lower area of the school. Schools are made from steel to withstand earthquakes.

"Le Tres Hermanos"

Matt, Forrest, and Nick snapped another picture at the top of a Masayan volcano crater. (Forrest's shoulders were really burned, so it was hard to get a decent "arms-wrapped-around-the-shoulders" photo).

"Smile!" -Cough Cough-

Allie and Neena snapped a picture near the top on one of three volcano craters at the active volcano Masaya. It was hard to breathe the sulfurous gasses emitted...

"Las mucho bueno fritas"

A monkey on the island enjoys a bag of fritas, ( Spanish for chips,) while chilling in the shade.

"Ooh ooh, aah aah!!"

One of the monkeys seen from the boat during our tour. Four types of moneys live on this island under the careful eye of a vetrinarian. These were the first monkeys some of the team had seen "outside" of captivity.

The "Bulletproof Vest"

According to our guide, Bronco, the web from this spider is used to make bulletproof vests due to it's great strength. (A high-tensile steel cable the same width as the web would be ten times WEAKER than the web strand...)

"I'm flapping like a bird!"

"Spanish is tough!"

Matt worked with Alejandrah on their opinion statement for presentation. This was a way to connect with our Nicaraguan peers and learn some Spanish, and have them practice some English.

"How do you say that again?"

Whitney learned from Luis how to say her sentences en Espanol (in Spanish), to share their opinions on; "Women are the best drivers."

"En Espanol por favor!"

Dan and Dakota and Tayron, a Grade 11 student, presented their learning in front of the class, with Maria, the teacher looking on.

Matt blasted one out to left field. It was a hot and dusty but both groups of students had an amazing time together. Barriers are dropping as we try hard to communicate in both languages.

We only drink gravity filtered water. So far, nobody has been even a little bit ill (except on the plane!).

Neena did a lot of painting today. She did some of the hard stuff - cutting in on the edges. It was a great day.

Alison always tries to make everyone smile. It doesn't usually take too long.

Mr. Goertzen, our new principal, has enjoyed every part of the trip so far. The singing time in the evenings have been fun with his guitar too.

Locked Up

We asked Brittany to be careful but here she is in jail. Actually, it is just the classroom windows. Everything is locked with iron in Nicaragua for safety.

It was a great day of painting together. We were hot, tired and full of paint but we made an impact on a little school in a tough neighborhood in Managua.

Why So Sour?

Not so much to the delight of our tastebuds, we we're all introduced to a new fruit native to Nicaragua. Small, green, and extremely sour but with empty stomachs we resided in eating these sour little friends.

While visiting our kindred friend/translator, Lenin's house, we trooped down the steep hill of a backyard he has to witness an amazing view.

During assembly in the school we visited today we had the priviledge of witnessing a cultural presentation of Nicaraguan dance.

All of our checked baggage is full of packages for delivering to the Nehemiah Center to be distributed to Christian schools in Nicaragua.

Today's temperature in Managua is 34 degrees. Nothing but sun in the forecast. Abbotsford... still a little winter left here.
